5 Tips for Using a Suede Yoga Mat
Suede yoga mats are a game-changer for your practice: ultra-grippy, soft underfoot, and seriously stylish. But to get the most out of yours, a little know-how goes a long way. Here are five tips to help you use your suede yoga mat like a pro.
1. Activate the Grip with Moisture
Suede is a natural material that actually performs better when slightly damp. Before your session, lightly mist the surface with water or let your hands and feet warm it up naturally. As you sweat, you'll notice the grip intensifying. Perfect for hot yoga, power flow, or any high-intensity movement.
2. Break It In Before Your First Use
New suede mats can feel a little slippery at first. Do a short warm-up session or use it during a gentle flow to get the surface primed. After a few uses, the suede fibres open up and the grip becomes exceptional.
3. Clean It the Right Way
Avoid soaking your suede mat or using harsh chemical sprays. Instead, wipe it down after each session with a damp cloth or a gentle, natural mat cleaner. For a deeper clean, hand wash with cold water and a mild detergent, then hang to air dry. Never put it in a dryer.
4. Roll It Suede-Side Out
When storing your mat, always roll it with the suede side facing outward. This helps the mat lie flat during your practice and protects the natural rubber base from cracking or deforming over time.
5. Keep It Out of Direct Sunlight
Suede can fade and dry out when exposed to prolonged sunlight. Store your mat in a cool, dry place. Ideally in a mat bag and avoid leaving it in a hot car or on a sunny balcony for extended periods. A little care goes a long way in keeping it looking and feeling its best.
